The Met Gala in 2021- Everything We Know

Met Gala in 2021

Tonight, September 13th, is the 2021 Met Gala, with live red carpet coverage beginning at 5:30 p.m. EST. The Met Gala, dubbed "fashion's biggest night of the year," returns this year as a smaller, more personal occasion than in previous years on the first Monday in May. (Due to COVID-19, the event was cancelled last year and rescheduled for this September.) While the red carpet may be a little different this year, there will still be spectacular fashions and celebrity sightings.

So, in preparation for the big blowout, here are all of the details we've learned so far about the event—including the theme, who's hosting it, what the Costume Institute exhibit will comprise, and what we can expect to see on the step and repeat.

What is the Met gala?

The Met Ball, often known as the Met Gala, is the fashion industry's counterpart of the Academy Awards. An evening of celebration and fundraising for a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute brings together designers, models, and Hollywood celebrities dressed in the year's most outrageous ensembles to celebrate and raise funds. Typically, everyone dresses in accordance with the subject and feel of the show; previous themes have included camp, religion, punk, and other subcultures.

When and where is it?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will host an intimate gala on September 13th, 2021, to celebrate the museum's centennial.

What’s this year’s theme?

It is planned that the Met Gala will celebrate everything that is American about fashion in 2021. Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, felt it was past time to reexamine American identity and fashion, particularly in light of the changes that have occurred over the last several years as a result of both political and social justice movements, and he organized this exhibition. The designer told Buybea that he was "very fascinated by American designers' responses to the social and political atmosphere, particularly around problems of body inclusion and gender fluidity," adding that "their work is very, very self-reflective." The revival of American fashion is, in my opinion, a genuine phenomenon." It is my firm belief that young designers in particular, much more so than their European counterparts (perhaps with the exception of the English designers), are at the forefront of talks about diversity and inclusion, as well as sustainability and transparency."

What will the exhibit look like?

The Costume Institute will host a two-part exhibition beginning in 2021 titled "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" and "In America: An Anthology of Fashion."

The opening of "A Lexicon of Fashion" in the Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Met on September 18 will mark the 75th anniversary of the Costume Institute. The exhibition will be designed to look like a house, with rooms and walls that cross to establish what curator David Bolton calls "a new vocabulary that is both more current and more reflective of the times we live in." Christopher John Rogers, Sterling Ruby, Conner Ives, Prabal Gurung, and Andre Walker will have work on display in the first section of the show.

On May 5, 2022, the American Wing's period rooms will host "An Anthology of Fashion." Bolton and the museum's curatorial team will work with American film directors to develop cinematic scenarios reflecting distinct eras in American fashion history for each chamber. 'An Anthology of Fashion,' which debuts on May 2nd, will be celebrated with a second Met Gala in 2022.

Who will be this year’s hosts?

Each year, the Met Gala is co-hosted by a number of cochairs. Timothée Chalamet and Billie Eilish will serve as honorary cochairs with Tom Ford and Anna Wintour as honorary chairmen of the 2021 Met Gala.

Will there be a red carpet?

Yes! While the event will be more intimate this year due to COVID-19 safety rules, the iconic Met stairs will still see a step and repeat. Prepare to be dazzled by the eclectic mix of outfits.

Is there a formal dress code?

Yes. The official dress code for the 2021 Met Gala is American Independence, as stated on the invitation. Expect this to be translated in a variety of ways, ranging from flashy star-spangled outfits to classic gowns designed by American designers. The first rule of the Met gala is to always expect the unexpected.

Who’s invited to the Met gala this year?

The mystery of who will attend the Met Gala is part of the fun! Designers typically invite the most talked-about celebrities of the moment to be their guests, so expect to see some big Hollywood names on the red carpet.

Can I watch the Met Gala?

To be sure, only one official livestream will be broadcast from the event, providing spectators with unprecedented access to the high-profile event in New York City, which will be shown on Vogue. The event will be broadcast live on the internet starting at 5:30 p.m. EST on the night of the event for those who will be unable to attend in person. In addition to Keke Palmer, who will host the webcast, there will also be Ilana Glazer (actress, writer, and director) as a special guest. Their collaboration will provide unique access to the Met Gala's famed red carpet, where they will conduct interviews with high-profile attendees as they arrive in great style on the legendary red carpet.

Are there Covid safety protocols in place?

The health and safety of guests and employees are of the utmost importance. All guests are required to show proof of full vaccination, produce a negative fast PCR test the day before, and wear proper face covers when indoors, with the exception of during eating or drinking, in order to participate.
